1 - Do Not Play Every Hand Rule number one of poker is simple. You do not have to play every hand that comes to you. One of the biggest problems with new players is they think they learn by simply "playing." If at any point you think you don't have the best hand, fold, save the money and observe to learn until you're more comfortable and confident. 2 - Take Note of Your Position The late position is a favorite for most poker players. You're able to read all the players, see their bets, raises and tells and get a feel for the round before you have put any money into the pot. There are advantages and disadvantages to all positions, but this is generally the best for new players. 3 - Examine the Table When making bets or raises, always keep a close eye on the table. How large is the pot? How many chips do my opponents have? Is my hand unbeatable enough to warrant going all-in? How much can I take while keeping everyone betting? Always think of the big picture. 4 - Unpredictable Betting Don't always bet the same hands. Just like you analyze other player's style and patterns, they analyze yours. Play mind games as hard as you play the card game. Make odd bluffs with an open end straight draw. If they start to think you're a sloppy player, the next time you have a winning hand they'll think it's a bluff and fall right into your trap. 5 - Aces Can Be Beat Remember that an Ace is just one card and one card can't win a bet. When you watch new players, they tend to think there is some significant strength in just an Ace. When you watch good players, there are many times they'll fold hands like A 7 or A 9. An ace is good when paired with maybe a 10, J, Q, K or another Ace. Pocket aces are great, but don't' get overly excited in most other situations.
